About OZ...OHAVI
ZEDEK A WARM AND WELCOMING JEWISH COMMUNITY
Ohavi
Zedek means Lovers of Justice. Our congregation offers religious, spiritual, educational,
social and community services and programs to people of all ages. Vermont's oldest
and largest Jewish congregation, OZ was created in 1885 by eighteen people, immigrants
from Lithuania.
Ohavi Zedek
today is a community of about 375 families. We are descendents of those earlier
settlers, and we are more recent residents of Vermont. Some of us grew up in families
that strongly identified as Jews religiously and culturally, some were raised
in totally assimilated households, and others have come to Judaism as adults.
We are single and partnered, straight and gay, expressing our Judaism through
a wide spectrum of observance. Many of our members live in interfaith families. Our
vibrant, egalitarian and inclusive congregation is committed to embracing traditions
while actively participating in our changing Jewish world. Ohavi

RELIGIOUS SERVICES
Erev
Shabbat at OZ Our Friday evening service is "havurah-like".
All present are encouraged to participate in tuneful and meaningful liturgical
songs, sometimes accompanied by guitar. These services are led by Rabbi Joshua
Chasan and Rabbi David Steinberg. Small children are encouraged to attend, with
their parents. Friday evening services begin at 6:00 PM. Occasionally each class
in the Hebrew School helps lead a class Shabbat service. Shabbat
Morning at OZ Our Shabbat morning service is traditional, without the use
of instrumental accompaniment. This worship service includes removing the Torah
ceremoniously from the Ark. After a procession around the sanctuary, the Torah
scroll is read using ancient melodies of biblical cantillation (trope). Following
services, we all enjoy a Kiddush where we greet our neighbors with a "Shabbat
Shalom." Our Hebrew School, which usually meets on Sunday mornings, meets
on Shabbat morning approximately once a month. On those occasions, various Hebrew
School classes often attend and participate in selected parts of the main Shabbat
morning service. All Saturday morning services begin at 9:00 AM. Tot
Shabbat Family Services Families with children ages 4 and younger;
join us for our new monthly "Tot Shabbat" program, led by Rabbi David.
The program starts at 11:00am and lasts about 30 minutes. Families are invited
to join the congregation at 11:30am for our community wide Kiddush in the social
hall. Please check the Hebrew School
Calendar or the Hebrew School
page for specific dates. Weekday
Service Our weekday service meets Sunday morning at 9:00 AM, and Sunday
through Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. If you need to say Kaddish, we recommend
that you let the office know in advance so that we can help make sure that a minyan
(quorum of 10 adult Jews required for the public recitation of Kaddish and certain
other prayers) is available. Also, if you need to say Mourner's Kaddish on Saturday
evening and request this in advance, we can organize a minyan for you. To sign
up for minyan, visit online at: http://www.ohavizedek.com/about/minyan_signin.shtml
LIFE-CYCLE
EVENTS
In many
ways, Judaism grows out of our marking the stages of our lives. From prayers during
pregnancy through the year-long process of mourning, our lives are enriched, even
defined, by the great variety of Jewish life-cycle rituals. Some are as ancient
as Abraham and Sarah, others have evolved through the centuries, and there are
some we are always inventing. Jewish culture is alive. Members
of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue are encouraged to learn about our traditions, to cherish
the ancient ways and have the courage to participate in the ongoing evolution
of Judaism. If you have questions about certain rituals, and certainly if you
find yourself about to journey through a particular passage of life - be it a
birth, a bar or bat mitzvah, a wedding or civil union, a conversion, or the death
of a loved one -- Rabbi Joshua Chasan would love to get together with you to share
ideas and make plans. We
encourage our members to celebrate their life-cycle events at the synagogue among
the members of our community. In addition to requesting a special ceremony or
a blessing during a regular service, you can consider sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat
on Friday evening or a kiddush or luncheon after the Saturday service in honor
of the event. We would be glad to work with you to make your event a memorable
one. Among the life-cycle
events that can be memorialized this way are a special birthday, a brit (circumcision),
a baby naming, an auf ruf (celebration a week or two prior to a wedding), a bar
or bat mitzvah, a memorial service, a wedding, a civil union, a conversion or
a funeral.
CLERGY & STAFF
Rabbi
Joshua Chasan As a child and younger man, Joshua
Chasan understood Judaism as a call to mend the larger world. While earning a
doctorate in American history, Joshua worked as a typesetter and then as director
of a social service organization serving older people. He continued his studies
at The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, where he was ordained in 1987.
Joshua's first pulpit was at Congregation Shomrei Emunah in Montclair, New Jersey.
He came to Vermont with his family in 1991 to serve as rabbi of Ohavi Zedek. Joshua
and Kathy Comstock Chasan were married in 1982. They are the parents of Zev and
Ari. Joshua's son Cavan lives in Burlington as well. What Joshua loves most about
Ohavi Zedek is the synagogue's potential to model a Jewish way of living that
is both traditional and unequivocally inclusive of all people. "We need everybody
here," he says. "The world truly is smaller, and it's a wonderful time
for Judaism, grounded as it is in the historic culture of our people, to embrace
a universal vision that really can be fulfilled." Rabbi
Joshua maintains office hours on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. To set

Rabbi David Steinberg Rabbi David grew up in New
York City, where he attended Orthodox Hebrew schools, and Suffolk County, Long
Island, where he became Bar Mitzvah and then served as a regular Torah reader
at a Conservative synagogue. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania
(B.A. in music, 1983) and Harvard Law School (J.D., 1987). He practiced law in
Portland, Maine from 1987-91, during which time he was very active in USCJ-affiliate
Temple Beth El as a Hebrew school teacher, cantorial soloist, Brotherhood co-president
and Board member. At
the age of 30 he decided to give up law practice to study at the Reconstructionist
Rabbinical College, where he was ordained in 1997. He served as spiritual leader
of Congregation Sons of Israel in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania from 1996-98 (first
as a student rabbi, later as a "full-fledged" rabbi), and as Hillel
director for Haverford, Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges in 1998-99. He arrived
in the Champlain Valley in August 1999, beginning a six-year stint as rabbi of
Temple Beth Israel in Plattsburgh, New York. 2005
was a big year for Rabbi David, with his Vermont civil union and Jewish marriage
to Peter Blackmer (a seventh-generation Vermonter), and his move to Ohavi Zedek
to take up the newly-created post of associate rabbi. Rabbi
David serves as Principal of Ohavi Zedek's Hebrew School. His other major role
is to serve as the congregation's Cantor and principal torah reader, which includes
working with bar and bat mitzvah students on the musical and liturgical aspects
of their preparation. In addition, he acts as OZ's liaison to the Vermont Chai
School (a joint project of Ohavi Zedek and Temple Sinai open to students in grades
eight through twelve) and assists Rabbi Joshua in providing rabbinic coverage
as needed. Rabbi
David's personal interests include running, viola playing, reading Canadian fiction

coming to Burlington, was working as a staff attorney at Burr and Forman Law Firm
and as a legal writing professor at Cumberland School of Law. Mike
grew up in New Jersey in a family with a strong Jewish identity. In fact, Mike
met Liz, also from New Jersey, on a summer program in Israel when the two were
teenagers working on a kibbutz. Mike later studied at Tel Aviv University for
a semester during college. Mike's

as the synagogue budget, committee structure, Board membership and all areas of
importance to the community. Ohavi Zedek's Board of Directors is responsible,
however, for ongoing management of the synagogue. The Board sets synagogue policies
in all non-religious areas, hires clergy and other synagogue personnel, oversees
maintenance of the physical plant, oversees finances and raises funds. Board
meetings usually take place at 5:30 PM on the third Thursday of each month and
are open to the public. The Board's thirteen members serve two- or three-year
terms. Elections are held each November. The names and contact information for
the Board can be found on our website www.ohavizedek.com
or in the Ohavi Zedek's newsletter, The Voice, which we print and mail
monthly. Each Board member
is assigned to at least one committee, but everyone's help is needed to ensure
the ongoing management of Ohavi Zedek. A synagogue is actually a community of
willing volunteers. The committee structure of Ohavi Zedek is the main way in
which members of the congregation can get involved and participate in running
the community. Please consider joining one of our committees and working to make
this a vibrant, exciting and meaningful place to be. Adult

EDUCATION
Hebrew
School The Hebrew School curriculum is project-based, using the arts in
learning. In our family-oriented Torah curriculum, parents learn to teach their
children the stories of the Torah, and students share their learning with each
other and the rest of the congregation. Students also learn Modern Hebrew. Special
events include classes for parents, family dinners and holiday programs.
2008-2009 School Year Class meeting
days: Kindergarten through 7th grade generally meets on Sunday mornings from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Approximately one weekend per month, school meets on
Saturday morning instead of Sunday morning. Please check the Hebrew School Calendar

students in 8th-12th grade courses on special topics along with opportunities
to socialize with Jewish peers. The non-graded, elective-based curriculum has
included classes in Hebrew language, images of the American Jew in popular culture,
and environmentalism, biomedical ethics, and litigation from a Jewish perspective.

co-directed by OZ's Associate Rabbi, David Steinberg and Temple Sinai's Education
Director, Judy Alexander. Young

our community's youth. Three age groups (grades 3-5, 6-7 and 8-12) host events
throughout the year, from camping trips and ski trips to bowling parties and rock
climbing, Israeli dancing and sukkah building. While programs incorporate Jewish
learning and practice, they also place a high value on the social aspects - Young
Judaea's primary goal is to bring Jewish kids together. Adult
Education Programs Ohavi Zedek offers a variety of classes and special
programs for adults throughout the year. Offerings have included Hebrew, Shabbat
meditation, Hasidic teachings about Pesach, the poetry of Yehuda Amichai, updates
